But I always hear from ex-military how it is drilled into their heads not to do this stuff etc and that they would never yadda yadda. Push comes to shove and they willingly commit war crimes time and time again.
Because it comes down to the Presidential pardon powers. They can defy a blatantly illegal order, be dishonorably discharged, lose their pensions, healthcare benefits, pay, etc. or, they can follow a blatantly illegal order, and receive a pardon for it later.

It seems that all those good soldiers who bravely defy orders in the name of American values only exist in propaganda content
