Living in South Africa, I had to reluctantly get a gun, hate it but after they shot my neighbours leg off through her daughter’s window I knew I had no choice because I had 3 other women living with me.
I will call it a successful gun ownership if I never have to use it, I really do not wish to be placed in that situation.
Having seen people be killed by firearms in front of me, the police’s apathy as they were giggling at me when they saw my red eyes and saying it’s what rural poor people do (I think it was their way of comforting me).
Some gun owners are reluctant owners, but really when you have as high a violent crime and murder rate as we do, you have to make a difficult choice.
There’s a huge difference between being a gun owner and a gun nut.
And unfortunately a lot of people on here don’t understand the difference

This describes the overwhelming majority of firearms owners I’ve interacted with, including some with sizable collections and even a police officer on the SWAT team.
To date I still find it incredibly weird how the US normalised bloodlust and murderous intent to the point where a considerable chunk of the country considers it their patriotic duty to protect their rights to keep weapons primarily intended for killing while presenting obvious signs of mental instability - as depicted.

This is a valid criticism of all hobbies tbf of course the problem with guns is that theyre for killing. I like knives but that means i get excited when i can open a package or cut something up in the garden, not that i want to plug someone in the head with a handheld canon.

If you’re a good gun owner, your guns are locked away in such a way that you can’t do proper home defense. Unless you’re walking around your house in underwear and a holster.

Thats only true if you have kids. There are no federal requirements for how you store your guns when not in use. If you dont have kids or strangers around, you can keep things like pistols on wall racks, loaded and ready to go. I for example, live way out in the sticks. If I call the cops, it takes a minimum of 20 minutes before anyone gets here. My nearest neighbors are also a couple miles away. So, if someone breaks in I have a 20 minute window with zero help. Call 911, then call .357
Fair point. But even in the city, cops are just there to document your losses after the fact. Unless you end up in a hostage situation, they’re not doing anything during the crime.

If you’re a good firearm owner, your firearms are secured from unauthorized access. Plenty of ways to achieve that while keeping them readily accessible to the intended user for home defense, especially without children, housemates, or houseguests.
