My favorite modern example of the spoiler effect was the 2006 Texas Governor’s race, which had a double-spoiler. Rick Perry was being challenged by Democrat Chris Bell, Independant Kinky Friedman, and Carol Strayhorn - anohlther Republican. Strayhorn split the Republican vote, spoiling Perry’s majority. But then Kinky grabbed a lot of the liberal voters, so Perry still won.
