You’re right about Hitler, but Kirk wasn’t Hitler in this analogy.

The world is probably a better place without him, but as far as I understand it all he did was say a bunch of stupid stuff.

Trump would not have been elected in 2024 without him. Trump himself said so.

He didn’t just “say a bunch of stupid stuff.” He’s indoctrinated countless young people into a hateful, violent ideology.

Ok, but that’s still in the realm of freedom of speech. I’m not saying it’s ok that Trump got elected, and I’m my saying I’m ok with the situation we’re in now. I’m just saying that stupid people saying stupid things is not the part of this that should be changed through violence.

Freedom of speech is the freedom from (unreasonable) government regulations on speech.

          Not even the same discussion.

The reason we need freedom of speech from the government is because the government has a monopoly on violence. The root of it is whether or not violence is an acceptable response to speech.

When people say “freedom of speech isn’t freedom from consequences”, they’re not typically referring to murder as one of the consequences. You can see why that would be a slippery slope if they were.

When does “saying stupid stuff” (that involves calling for violence from others) cross the line? When does inciting your base to trample the human rights of others cross the line?

I’m not claiming to be wise enough to know exactly where the line is. But the line exists, clearly.
