Genuinely curious, is it just as a side effect of appearing to come from an EU server that means you trigger automated privacy systems? Or is there a legal basis by which you can say “I routed this through an EU server therefore I’m subject to EU privacy law” (maybe there isn’t even a difference)
I doubt it’s a recent thought, knowing civil engineers, they’re absolute perverts when it comes to concrete.

Sometimes home just feels like home! Having the ability to migrate a user entity independent of instance might encourage more of it though. Would be nice for comms too - eg. If somewhere like lemm.ee goes down the popular comms could be migrated to other instances and maintain continuity seamlessly to users (if such a thing were possible within activity pub). Kind of like a “forwarding address” that gets disseminated to all federated instances.
Seagate have never once secretly changed the underlying disk technology on a NAS grade drive to one utterly unsuited for use in a NAS drive and then sold it as a NAS grade drive at a premium price because it’s a NAS grade drive. So there’s that.
