Ehm, no? Christian Whitehead and co didn’t singlehandedly save the franchise, to think that is absurd.
Frontiers was the most acclaimed game of the franchise created by Sonic Team in years, and Sonic X Shadow Generations was created on the basis of Frontiers and was a success.
What about the movies? I’ve met more new Sonic fans who were introduced to the franchise by the movies than by Sonic Mania. It doesn’t even come close.
What Mania have to do with the fact that Sonic Racing Crossworld is one of the most anticipated games of the year?
Mania is great, and yes, it was an important part of the renaissance of the franchise, but not the only one nor the most crucial. We have to quit treating Mania like the second coming of Jesus, please.

I don’t mean that other people have changed your opinion, but quite the opposite: a game that you think is good and you didn’t know that other people hated it.
The PS2 version, which i think is kinda the same as the Wii version. It was my first PS2 game ever too.
I bet it was to artificially increase the difficulty of those levels, if not, I can’t explain why. It is the single detail that makes the Knuckles/Rouge levels less enjoyable.
Ah, a comrade SA1 enjoyer 🤝
I was 10 years old when I played Unleashed. I wouldn’t even have internet back then (I’m from Latin America)
I think it’s a reaction to the negative reaction the console had when it was announced. Just as there are people telling lies in favor of the console, there are those who tell lies against it. It’s a give and take between Nintendo simps and Nintendo Haters.
I think it’s only worth buying a Switch 2 if you’ve never owned the Switch 1. With how continuous the console is and how similar the experience is, only marginally improved, I don’t think it’s a good idea to get carried away by the hype and buy it just because.
It’s going to have crossplay, so for me it’s already GOTY material.

Sonic fan for more than two decades here! It’s always great to see more people interested in the franchise!
I would say that maybe it would be good to start with Sonic Generations (or Sonic x Shadow Generations if you can afford it, which is the same but with the Shadow The Hedgehog story as an extra), so you get familiar with the gameplay of both classic and modern games, have a sense of where it’s going and decide whether to go ahead or not.
I see that your interest is more focused on the characters and their dynamics, fantastic! the best part of the franchise in my opinion!. In that sense I would say that your best option to go deeper after Sonic Generations would be the mythical Adventure saga (Adventure 1 and Adventure 2). They are the games in which much more emphasis was put on the characters and the story.
Already after this and if you are hooked is that I recommend that you play the classics. You can play Sonic 1, Sonic CD, Sonic 2 and Sonic 3 & Knuckles in Sonic Origins (although you can also emulate the Mega Drive games), and then there is Sonic Mania. Why not start with the classics? Because they are very much of their time: pure gameplay, simple and not so deep story, but very fun to play!
You talk about games, but let me recommend you to read the IDW Comics in a complementary way. They are REALLY good! If I remember correctly, one of the artists on the comics, Evan Stanley, worked on The Murder of Sonic the Hedgehog, and the story of the game plays out very similar to how the Comics read. It’s also where you’ll find the most depth in the characters (and you’ll encounter the best story arc EVER written for the franchise, EVER).
To sum up:
Good luck and have fun!
This game was so much fun! There were moments when I was struggling not to die laughing. One of those moments that are unrepeatable.
It’s about time!
But the Alien didn’t have… Never mind.
OK, but why he lowered his pants…?
Oh They are scare. That’s Good.
