Me: Doc, I’m in constant pain, my lower back is killing me, my hips are killing me, and random parts of my body go numb or twitch and randomly hurt for no rhyme or reason.

Doc: You need to lose weight and see a therapist, this is most likely depression and anxiety.

Therapist: Yes, you have depression and anxiety, but the 7 years of therapy you’ve had shows it’s not just anxiety or depression causing this, advocate for yourself.

    Friend: Have you tried yoga?

  • DEI and “woke culture” made me feel seen as a person with a disability and a facial paralysis. 100 years ago I would have been an orphan and hidden away. Not long before that I would have been “sacrificed” as an evil baby.

Did corporations cash in on that? Yes they did because that’s all corporations are supposed to do is make money and bleed the consumer.

If you are anti-woke and anti-DEI then you’re really saying you want to include everyone who looks like you and relegate those who don’t to obscurity either by way of deportation, exile, slavery, or death. It’s exactly like what every country perpetuating genocide has done in history.

What is your solution to my problem of again not feeling like I can go out in public because of this administration’s policies. What about to the LGBTQIA people who are afraid that their marriage will be nulled or are also afraid to go out in public?

Are you ok with fixing people different from you back to isolation, declining mental health, and attempts to take their life because of getting rid of DEI?

  • But…the whole point of Medicaid was that it is there to cover those who are poor because they wouldn’t be able to afford health care otherwise.

I’m on SSDI and get Medicaid and Medicare with the only cost to me being the Medicare Part B coverage that is close to $200/month. I don’t pay copays or for any of my prescriptions. However I have noticed the quality of my healthcare from the same doctor that I had while on private pay health insurance has taken a nosedive. My guess is the office doesn’t want to deal with Medicaid or Medicare more than they have to. Or my health could just be that bad, either way it’s worse.

If this proposal ends up as legislation I would end up having to pay copays for health services and prescriptions I use right now that would most likely not be financially viable. If Medicaid gets taken away from me completely I lose all access and if stopping medications doesn’t kill me then the lack of oxygen due to extreme sleep apnea will.

I’m so sick of being terrified the last few months (SSDI, Medicaid/Medicare, and HUD housing). Just fucking do it already and get this over with instead of fucking torturing those of us at the bottom more than we’ve already been tortured just going through the process of trying to get access to these programs.

  • I don’t know if it’s necessarily a problem with AI, more of a problem with humans in general.

Hearing ONLY validation and encouragement without pushback regardless of how stupid a person’s thinking might be is most likely what creates these issues in my very uneducated mind. It forms a toxically positive echo-chamber.

The same way hearing ONLY criticism and expecting perfection 100% of the time regardless of a person’s capabilities or interests created depression, anxiety, and suicidal ideation and attempts specifically for me. But I’m learning I’m not the only one with these experiences and the one thing in common is zero validation from caregivers.

I’d be ok with AI if it could be balanced and actually pushback on batshit crazy thinking instead of encouraging it while also able to validate common sense and critical thinking. Right now it’s just completely toxic for lonely humans to interact with based on my personal experience. If I wasn’t in recovery, I would have believed that AI was all I needed to make my life better because I was (and still am) in a very messed up state of mind from my caregivers, trauma, and addiction.

I’m in my 40s, so I can’t imagine younger generations being able to pull away from using it constantly if they’re constantly being validated while at the same time enduring generational trauma at the very least from their caregivers.

  • So right now I’m not in a financial situation that I can even possibly think about donating.

My general issue with FOSS is the guilt trip I go on when devs plead for donations – that’s MY issue, not any of the dev teams – but it plays a part in not using FOSS as much as I would like. I don’t want to sell my soul, but that’s about all I have to give right now so free ad-supported services and software are where I tend to lean to these days.

However, I am trying to put as much focus on supporting less shitty humans and buy locally whenever I can now. I didn’t realize the views of the devs of Lemmy until a few days ago and I’m a little concerned to be even using Lemmy as a whole as it shows some level of tacit support for the devs and their beliefs. If they weren’t open about it, obviously this wouldn’t be an issue but since it’s out in public it’s an issue.

    I swear I have a point to all this…

Is Lemmy funded just by direct contributions from users or do instances take extra money from their donations and funnel it down to the main project?

If anyone is familiar with the various 12 Step programs, this is pretty much how those main programs get funded. The local meetings take donations that pay for the rent and any other expenses and then donate left over funds to the main service organization while keeping a reserve for emergencies.

If I were in the position to donate, I would feel much better donating to Lemmy.ee rather than the main project considering their views on certain political issues. I would not be directly donating, but if the instance donated extra funds I might be ok with that. It just feels different for some reason.

  • I switched from Kindle Paperwhite 1st Gen to a Kobo Clara Color a month or so ago. It was cheaper than Amazon’s color Kindle offering plus Amazon not letting readers download their books pushed me out. I did try the jailbreak for the Kindle and…I gave up on it after numerous issues that I ran into probably relating to the age of my Paperwhite.

I mostly use Overdrive (Libby) to get books from my library. The Kobo has Overdrive support…mostly due to Kobo store availability and whether or not you have multiple library cards with multiple libraries. I’m in NY state and have a library card with my city library and then one with the NY Public Library. This isn’t really a reflection on Kobo, more so Overdrive being shitty and not willing to update their Kobo app to work with how they migrated from the Overdrive app to Libby.

This is where Calibre comes in handy, I download the book to my phone from Libby, transfer it to my Mac and use Calibre to add it to it to my Kobo. It’s not pretty like Overdrive’s Kindle integration where you basically press a few buttons in the Libby app and the book is sent to your kindle.

As far as reading the book in general, I don’t really notice that huge of a difference other than better technology. I did have some slight bugginess when I first used it, but after a full charge and a few reboots it seems to be fine now. I don’t have a current gen Kindle to compare it to, so someone else can speak to that. I do wish it wasn’t such a hassle to get my library books to it, but at least I have access to all my books!
