True, I was looking from the perspective of lemmy. But I think that’s fair, as the fediverse is not as federated as it pretends to be. For Lemmy it’s about 1,000 servers. I guess many of them are singles person instances, but that comes from my subjective feeling and can be bullshit ;)

I don’t know about the “tens of thousands of servers” in the Fediverse. For now, it’s pretty easy to keep an overview. I also do not think the number of servers will scale linearly with the user base. Most people may choose a server randomly, but after a while in the Fediverse you will find your instance. Take feddit.org as an example - they have a charitable organization behind then, the “Fediverse foundation”. People like that instance because of the terms it operates under, and they do their thing. Server admins are not necessarily random people, and I don’t think coordination happens via hash tags.

For me it was one of the main motivations to join sh.itjust.works

I think Voyager is one of the most popular Lemmy web frontends. I haven’t used reddit for a long time but it seems to be more similar to the new than old design… I honestly don’t talk about reddit designs with people in the real world

It seems people have different preferences and there are some millenials that want to watch just funny cat images and don’t mind looking at the less funny cats from time to time. The article we are talking about (do we?) draws shitty conclusions based in shitty data (“people within my bubble”).

I’m mobile so I am much faster scrolling. I guess that’s an important point, most people probably use their smartphones browsing Instagram etc. Also I use Voyager for browsing Lemmy on PC, no reddit for me

Obviously not. I, a millennial prefer the “new” design. I can subscribe to communities and subreddits with already is a good way to filter content. I don’t have to look at everything that gets thrown at me. Also I do not have to be scared there is a hidden ad somewhere inbetween like when using Instagram or whatever.

I also really liked the forums from the bronze age, but those were text-based at the post level, while Lemmy also supports images and links (including thumbnails).

I wonder if that’s really true though. From a strategic point of view it makes not much sense to me to focus on such a tiny community as Lemmy is over the usual targets such as TikTok, Meta and Shitter.

The community is a very weird mix of Anti-Imperialists, communists and islamists.
They are not openly Russia-friendly, but they are very uncritical towards authoritarian systems. From pro-palestine over pro Hamas to pro Iran, and then you are almost there.

I sometimes wonder if it is just the US-american left going insane these days or if some corners of Lemmy are under the influence of Russian and Chinese troll factories.
