You should choose an instance whose admins are looking out for things like that and keeping your experience enjoyable, banning spambots or defederating from spambot farms when they are discovered.

Lemmy is easier to use than the UBB forum I started to become active on at the age of 10 that was the entry point for me being on the Internet at all. Back then we didn’t have Markdown, but BBCode, and I had that figured out after a few weeks.

At least on Lemmy, every post and comment has a colorful button that serves as a link to the original post (i.e. on the poster’s home instance). I just used that button to see this post on your home instance and it seems that there, it is hidden behind the “More” menu and called “Open original URL”.
So that gives you links to the post on all home instances of the users who have already commented in the thread.

I remember for some time following a LibreWolf community that was hosted on Lemmy from my Mastodon account and wondering why all the LibreWolf team was doing was reposting Lemmy comments (some of which I’d already seen on Lemmy). Then I figured out what was going on, now I know a lot more about ActivityPub. :D

Yeah I know, I sort Lemmy by “new comments” and Mastodon obviously only chronologically.

The great thing about the fediverse is that it is harder to censor: as long as you find one instance where you can publish some information, you can publish it.
The bad thing about the fediverse is that it is also harder to moderate: as long as a spammer or troll finds one instance from which they can send unwanted messages, they will be able to send them.
I wasn’t really familiar with it before this post. Seems it is just an instance full of bots relaying RSS feeds to Lemmy? I think that can certainly be useful, but I also think the structure of Mastodon is more suitable for reading RSS feeds than that of Lemmy, so I think I’m going to keep reading RSS feeds through https://rss-parrot.net/ (and sometimes post things to appropriate Lemmy communities if I think more people should see them).

My understanding is that many people in the US and Canada identify with their ancestry? Lots of Americans think of themselves as “Irish” for example, some of them may actually be immigrants from Ireland, others may have more-or-less distant Irish ancestry, so this is what may be going on here.
