Move marks president’s latest effort to dismantle pollution regulations and support for cleaner-running vehicles

Donald Trump announced on Wednesday that he is repealing the Biden-era federal fuel economy standards, significantly weakening fuel efficiency requirements for tens of millions of new gasoline-powered cars and light trucks.

It marks the US president’s latest effort to dismantle pollution regulations and federal support for cleaner-running vehicles and renewable energy. Burning gasoline is a significant contributor to global heating and transportation is the largest source of greenhouse gas emissions in the United States.

“We are officially terminating Joe Biden’s ridiculously burdensome, horrible actually, Cafe standards that imposed expensive restrictions,” Trump said in an Oval Office announcement, flanked by top auto executives including the CEOs of Ford and Stellantis. “It put tremendous upward pressure on car prices, combined with the insane electric vehicle mandate.”

“I want to destroy the world quicker because think of all the shareholder value we can create along the way

Its really fucked up man. I’m not a communist at all but I start to understand why people would want to go the complete opposite way of this system.

Its basically “I don’t give a fuck how many people die or even if we destroy the entire world in the process I just want to generate more money for the people at the ‘top’” and its really sad.

There’s absolutely no reason to do this, other than generate more money at the expense of the citizens and the entire planet.

Fuel efficiency—the measurement for getting more mileage out of the same amount of gasoline. Congratulations, MAGA voters, you played yourself! When you pick up that new pile of trash made by Ford or Stellantis (and I know you will because they’re AMERICAN* cars), I hope you enjoy the higher gas expenses that you voted for.

    * With the extra irony being that many of those “American” brands are owned by Stellantis, which isn’t even headquartered anywhere in North America.

They already played themselves by picking the ‘American’ vehicles. They are all trash and hard to work on.

The Japanese ones are really the only ones built for longevity and ease of maintenance.

No candidate is owed your vote, no matter what, no matter who the opposition is. Earn the vote. Dems did this just as much as trump is doing it.

Biden: Puts in fuel efficiency standards.

        You: Nope.

I mean there is literally no other way to describe the sitaution.

This isn’t about Biden, it’s about the Dems giving us shitty candidates that no one likes and expecting us to just suck it up. They shafted Bernie, and they’ll shaft any other true progressive dem for another neolib shill. That doesn’t change if people continue voting for them. End of discussion.

While Harris didn’t explicitly say it, it was obvious she would continue on climate issues.

And are you even reading what the article is about? Because it seems like you’re avoiding it. The article is literally about the fuel efficiency standards that Biden put in, and you are dead set on ignoring that. So I guess it bears repeating: Trump repealing Biden’s fuel efficiency standards is what you voted for.

Again, not even talking about the article. The comment is blaming the people who refused to vote for a shit candidate, and you all completely refuse to see the faults of your party. Sure they’re better than Republicans, but not by much. Neither party gives a shit about you. This isn’t the fault of non voters, it’s the fault of the system that’s currently in place and it doesn’t matter whose in charge, if the rich want it, they’re gonna get it. Trump wouldn’t be doing this if it didn’t benefit his backers. Same way the Dems would.

Not even in the slightest. Fuck Trump, but fuck the Dems for doing absolutely nothing and expecting everyone’s vote. Every election is the same since Obama

So Obama put these in place, Trump undid them. Biden puts similar in place, Trump undoes them. There sure seems to a lot of undoing for nothing ever being done. There are a lot of shitty Democrats, the U.S. leans far right, but “democrats do nothing” is the shield Trumpers hide behind every day.

Yeah, but car makers will still adhere to the intentional standard, since the intentional market is what they can profit from the most

Depends. I don’t think we are exporting a whole lot of SUVs and pickups…especially big body-on-frame SUVs.

CAFE standards already killed the small/midsize car market. Automakers have all their chips in the SUV/CUV segment, because they are in the same category as giant trucks, and thus they improve the average fuel economy.

That, combined with the fact that Trump doesn’t do anything for the heck of it. Somebody is gaining (or at least planning to gain) from this (besides him)…makes me think that this will have significant negative impacts for the environment.

I’m not sure there are many body on frame SUVs left.

And the “same category as trucks” has more to do with safety standards. Fuel economy has to do with wheelbase; the way the math works out, it’s easier to build a less fuel efficient massive vehicle than a more fuel efficient small one.

Unfortunately, the EU is about to partly cave on that* for lesser tariffs. I can’t believe this is happening.

      * at least security in SUVs; not sure about emissions. Hopefully not, but the agreement does not specify.

National standards might change, but I’m betting California and some other states will still hold car manufacturers to a higher standard.

Just another horrible thing in a long line of horrible things both Trump admins have done. Wrt climate action, leaving the Paris Agreement was the big one. After that, this - perversely - feels like par for the course.

    Cafe standards

Not familiar with that turn of phrase … oh, it’s another acronym: CAFE
