President Donald Trump is threatening to impose a 100% tariff on goods imported from Canada if America’s northern neighbor goes ahead with its trade deal with China.
Instead they do The Diplomatic Thing and take him seriously. Usually appeasing, sometimes crawling up his bunghole, but never asking the obvious: “have you lost it completely?” (Well, Carney apparently does. I was thinking about that sorry bunch on my home continent)
Sometimes somebody manages to walk the line by saying something that will please his Dumbness but is very obviously over the top to everybody else. Mark Rutte - not that I like him much otherwise - did that once. That was fun. But it doesn’t really help either.
I think we’re starting to see a shift in foreign policy though. Especially after Davos.
Carnie’s speech was powerful. European leaders got Trump to back down (so they think) after organising and preparing a strong, unified response that spooked the markets.
I think they are finally starting to realise that he can’t be placated, he isn’t going away and that he needs to be stood up to.
