A high-ranking federal prosecutor in California is receiving backlash Saturday from gun rights groups like the NRA after his comments on the deadly shooting in Minneapolis Saturday.
In a post on X, U.S. Attorney Bill Essayli cautioned against approaching law enforcement with a firearm, arguing that there is a “high likelihood” officers would be legally justified in shooting.
The National Rifle Association condemned Essayli’s comments on the shooting.
“This sentiment from the First Assistant U.S. Attorney for the Central District of California is dangerous and wrong,” wrote the NRA in a response to his comment on X. "Responsible public voices should be awaiting a full investigation, not making generalizations and demonizing law-abiding citizens.
Good god the NRA is such a BS organization.
On one end they are yelling at one politician for saying, bringing a gun to a protest has a chance of giving them an excuse to shoot you. Which is objectively what just fricking happened, and good grief Bill Essayli’s backtrack of it is… almost worse.

Good fucking grief… The man wasn’t an agitator… he didn’t “refuse to disarm”. He got the shit kicked out of him for trying to help a woman up, before they spotted the gun, disarmed him themselves and then executed him.

C’mon NRA. The reason for your whole existence is so citizens can form a militia when their own government starts to rot and becomes violent towards them. Hmm…maybe it was the money all along. Mo’ wars, mo’ violence, mo’ strife, mo’ money.
Those of us in the firearms community haven’t been calling the NRA “Negotiating Rights Away” for nothing. It’s mostly older fudds that are still members. Their firearms safety stuff is still legit but for the most part the NRA sucks.
IDK, I was pretty sure they exist as a vehicle for Russians to launder money and peddle influence in the US.

It used to be about safety, and training. Then columbine happened and they made a conscious decision to only protect gun msnufacturers.
The NRA needs to STFU at this point. They enabled this. Their followers are either collaborators (being ICE), or cowards who cosplayed defending against Authoritarianism; the time they could have mobilized to assert their Holy 2nd Amendment is already long past.
Of course it’s neither and both – they just wanted the money.
You also need to take into consideration that a significant amount of the NRAs funding was found to be from Russian sources. If not entirely compromised they have to be considered at least somewhat functioning as a Russian asset. Between that and their blatant bias towards gun manufacturers interests we really shouldn’t be surprised when they fail to operate in the best interests of the American public.
Seriously California should consider replacing him. Given the political climate and event that caused this statment its in bad taste assuming he isn’t a fascist.
He’s a federal prosecutor, so he’s a career federal employee. The state of California did not confirm him. It’s the area in which he operates.
