    I’m slightly annoyed that the red book isn’t depicted above the blue, and the picture frame is also not in the side view.

      The arm of the cactus in the first frame is also pointing forwards or towards the position of the second frame. In the second frame the arm is pointing away from the camera.

      Somebody rearranged the whole cupboard between the frames.

      The picture frame is probably farther back than it looks, still no excuse for it not showing over the top.

      My homeowner OCD kicking in. No way that screw is holding a shelf with that much weight. Should have extended into the stud. I would have also accepted toggle bolts or other anchoring devices.

    It’s possible to cut a groove in a board so you can drive a screw outwards from it, but that’s pretty difficult and also the wrong approach for shelves which should be attached to the wall by supports underneath instead to distribute forces better.

      You could make this exact shelf as a floating shelf. It’s a 1x2 frame with a thin board on top.

    In this case, the bookshelf is stronger than that poor screw. When attaching things, especially things with variable load and the potential for a lot of touching, you absolutely need to either drill into one or more studs (based on length of said item), or use the appropriately-rated drywall anchor (they are rated based on weight load). Both the anchor and screw must pierce the drywall, and the screw must be tightened so that it collapses the anchor back into the drywall. That’s what gives it the ability to hold up.
