[a character sits at their desk, in front of their computers, and complains angrily]
Mainstream media? Unreliable, biased, full of fake news, they keep lying…
You can’t trust them!

[changing to a point of view beind the character allows us to see that their screen is filled with other angry characters that look like the main character]
That’s why I get all my news from angry dudes on social media and men’s right activism podcasts

they are mainstream media. joe rogan is one of the most popular media franchises. it doesn’t matter he’s in a newer format than fox news, it matters that he’s part of the same mechanism and cultural delivery system

Alot of those Podcaster dudes target the vulnerable and disenfranchised to get clicks. Also they are part of the reason for young men getting into the alt-right pipeline

All sources are biased. The ones that say they aren’t are trying to trick you. Understanding the bias of what you consume allows sifting through to get the information.

I had to stop being friends with a guy because he doesn’t trust in a lot of news.

But he would constantly go, “Asmongold said…”

On paper mine could have. Instead he spent his last years dying, cutting out all his friends that echoed the sentiment of the men his own father flew to Germany to unalive, in disbelief. And he “wasn’t political.” Just common sense. Worked 7 days a week until the end when he went out under water from medical bills, and about to lose the house. No sarcasm, my father was a working class American hero.

Uh… Take away the ironic “men’s rights” part and you are your dad. Unless you’re actively ensuring your feeds are not algorithm content and the parts of the internet you’re hanging out in aren’t socially reinforcing…

Otherwise, we call these “echo chambers”. And funny enough is that those in them create the most “me vs them” content, all the while constantly reassuring “the audienice” that they’re not in one.

But, yeah. I’m sure I’m wrong and helping your dad to navigate through the ongoing onslaught of media is something you’ve tried.

Edit: GOD DAMN I’m so self- righteous and sassy tonight. Ignore the sass. Get the vibe. A apologise for the sass, but I won’t delete because the vibe.

Point is, you and your dad have two opposing feeds. Recognise that they are feeds and move on from that.

I’n not the person you replied to, but I just want to offer kudos for your edit. Recognising that you didn’t need the snark is a rare thing online now-a-days.

  • So I had the misfortune of hearing a joe rogan podcast the other day. It was quite insufferable before I even knew who it was. They were talking about some cool science stuff for a couple minutes, then spent the next half hour bashing the scientific community and making ad hominem arguments about them. Sponsored by a gambling app. For fucks sake, talk about the science thing more damnit!

Many years ago I sometimes got stuck in a work truck with a guy who would play nothing but conservative bullshit radio, and it was insufferable.

Nothing but a non-stop stream of hate and bile and misinformation, and so many ads for products I would be embarrassed to be seen buying.

Its all been lies as long as Ive been alive. True integrity in journalism has always been rare and an uphill battle. As soon as you come to terms with the fact that monied interests are never going to stop manipulating media, its easier to not take any of it too seriously.

Turns out the world is ruled by a secret cabal of people that decide its fate during weird highly immoral sex ceremonies… And it was that cabal that decided to give visibility to those people.

I haven’t found this. In my experience I’ve only gotten articles. Some articles of dubious veracity yet, articles from sources at least making an effort to appear reputable.

Then again I’ve only been using Lemmy on one account so far.

well thats what i’m talking about. Not literal blogs, but opinion websites masquerading as news sites. I dont see how that’s any better than the right wing manosphere trash the comic is criticizing

If those blogs are “unreliable, bias, full of fake news” then, yeah I guess. Again, I haven’t run into those problems with articles on Lemmy.

Could you point me to an example of your experience?
