It’s not “just-for-show.” In the case of a Civil War, they can now wall off DC, creating a fortress with an oceanfront escape route, and the White House in the center.
Anyone trying to take back the seats of power - White House, Capitol, Supreme Court, is going to have to breach that fortress and fight their way to those power centers, or at least the White House.
